ecommerce

let's try to trace back some parts of our history (as i remember it).

way, way, way back then (or should i say once upon a time?) merchants travel great distances just to sell their goods. and what do they get in return? goods as well. like if i sell silk, i will most likely get pearls in exchange for my product and then i will have to barter again the pearls to live. and it goes on and on and on. then, a special kind of trade good was 'invented' and that good made buying and selling of goods easier. of course, as you may have guessed, the good is money or currency, whichever you prefer.

money made the exchange of goods easier but the internet made it LOADS easier. imagine, merchants need not cross deserts, oceans, mountains, villages just to OFFER their goods. all they have to do is to post the pictures of the goods in the 'net and wait. simple, right? that's the wonder of e-commerce. of course, what i've written is just about 1/100 of the benefits of ecommerce. governments, business and individuals are hooked with this easy transaction. just a few clicks and you're done. no sweat, a business transaction completed with just a few taps on the keyboard.

moreover, the scope of ecommerce may be as vast as the WWW itself. it can reach virtually every place in the world that has electricity and telephone lines. it's just easy. BUT it has it's downsides. you have to be really careful about the websites you're going to buy the goods from because there are fraudulent sites that will just use your credit card without really sending you a good or perhaps the goods might be damaged and all that. but there are a lot of good ecommerce sites like eBay and amazon. i guess all it takes is to read a few comments from you fellow consumers.

ecommerce is really a great revolution is business. i hope it's just the start of a lot of better (and incredibly simple and secure) OL business transactions. and hey, with the rate the things are going, anything's possible.

can we be sure that we're safe OL?

there are a lot of security issues that are floating around us nowadays. mainly because of the ease of access we have to files that are under the IPR law through the internet. there are torrent sites, hacking sites and all these 'free' downloads if only you know where to look. it's as if people don't care anymore about the hardships others faced just to procure the set of information they so thoughtlessly 'steal'. if steal is a very harsh word for you, then let me rephrase it: download, copy-paste.

moreover, identity thefts are rampant. i have heard of a lot of stories about how their credit cards had been used by another person, how another practically begged his friends to get cellphone load or money and the likes. it gets tiring. why don't just people be responsible with the 'net? however of a cliche it may be, as Uncle Ben puts it, "With great power comes great responsibility." having virtually the whole world at your fingertips is so much of 'power' so we need to be responsible. information is practically flooding our computers everytime we log in to the 'net and yet, we've never been the responsible enough.

i guess, laws really have to be strictly implemented to protect the welfare of millions of 'net users everyday. it's the only way that people will have complete faith while surfing loads of sites everyday. honestly, i don't feel so safe anymore. i haven't heard of someone who got prosecuted because of an internet crime recently and it creeps me. i know there are a lot of illegal transactions ongoing everyday OL but no one's being held responsible. it's just downright creepy, right?
